What Sonny Hudson is reading & recommending.....

Posted: 12/27/2008

  • I just finished the latest novel from David Baldacci, Divine Justice. It's the latest (final??) in the Camel Club series, and like all of David's books, it does not disappoint.
  • Scarpetta by Patricia Cornwell   While not as much to my taste as some of her very earliest books based on her Kay Scarpetta character (a great character, by the way), I think it's her best work of the past few years.
  • Recently read:
    • Simple Genius by David Baldacci -- how the heck did I miss this book, and the others in the series, when they came out? Even though I was reading this one, the third in the series, without having read the two preceeding it, it didn't diminish my enjoyment a bit. Highly recommended!
    • Whole Truth & The Collectors (both by David Baldacci) - I read both of these books over the past 4-6 months and both were top-notch. But then again, aren't his books always that good?
    • The 5th Horseman: Women's Murder Club by James Patterson: OK, I'm not exactly in the target demographic for the Women's Murder Club series. I picked this book up in paperback from an airport book store while traveling God-knows-where. I wasn't expecting to like it even though I am a big fan of James Patterson, particulalry his Alex Cross novels. But this book/this series? Focused on women and targeted towards women? What the heck -- I loved it! I plan to read others in the series as time allows, even if they're not considered a 'manly' book. Good writing is good writing -- and what can I say? I'm a big fan of Gray's Anatomy and Private Practice and a couple of other 'chick shows', so I shouldn't have been all that surprised:)

Let the Truth Be Told: Frequently Asked Questions

A lot of readers have asked questions about various scenes, characters, etc in my new novel, Let the Truth Be Told. I thought this might be an appropriate forum to answer those questions for everyone.  Don’t see an answer to what’s on your mind? Just send an email to sonny56@cox.net and I’ll try to answer in a future FAQ.

1.      QUESTION: How much is the main character, Dr. Keith Bryant, like you?

ANSWER:  Not a lot, actually. I tried hard to make him different because I didn’t want people that knew me to read too much into the character as they read the book (but it still happens). Whereas Keith is a PhD, a Naval Academy graduate, former military, and a successful entrepreneur, I’m really none of those thing. He’s also younger, much better looking, and a lot wealthier.  There are some similarities, though: we both like cooking, good food, good wine, and boating (although his boat is MUCH bigger and MUCH more expensive than mine).

2.      QUESTION: You expressed, through your characters, a lot of political opinions. Are those your opinions?

ANSWER: Somewhat. That is, I’m pretty much of a centrist -- which actually means you’re a liberal in most people’s eyes. But like Keith, I have voted and supported Republican candidates in the past and I subscribe to many of the values that they USED to have. In the story, though, it was important that Keith and Loren (and many others) be more liberal and less trusting of the current Republican administration and leadership.

3.      QUESTION: Are your beliefs regarding the events of 9/11 the same as your characters?

ANSWER: No, not at all. I’m not a believer in this conspiracy, or any others, for that matter. That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy reading about them and studying some of the theories that have been put out there regarding 9/11, the assassination of JFK, and others. That is not to say that I don’t hold out the possibility that there is more to the events of 9/11 than what we’ve been told, especially if one were to ‘follow the money’. I am a big believer in the fact that, when any kind of crime/tragedy occurs, the money trail is probably the single most important clue to follow.

4.      QUESTION: Are the characters that make up the conspiracy group, Let the Truth Be Told, based on real people?

ANSWER: No, none of the characters from the Let the Truth Be Told conspiracy group are based on real people. Their names, their locations, their backgrounds, etc. were all made up.

5.      QUESTION: Are the characters in your book based on friends or people you know?

ANSWER: Only one - the character of David Ward is based loosely on one of my closest friends. The rest of the characters are all fictitious.

6.      QUESTION: You used Charlottesville, VA, Annapolis, MD, and Northern VA for some of the scenes in your book, including a lot of places that ‘locals’ might know but tourists won’t. How did you find these places?

ANSWER: I have some really close friends that live in the Charlottesville, VA area and I’ve spent a considerable amount of time with them over the past 15+ years. Many of the restaurants, retail locations, etc. come from my time (and many great times!) there. I’ve also spent a lot of time in Annapolis, MD, enjoying the restaurants and bars there, as well as the fall US Powerboat Show, and I have lived and worked around the Northern VA area off and on for almost 20 years.

Let the Truth Be Told

Daring New Political Action Thriller Takes on the Truth Behind Tragedy

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Whether they wholeheartedly believe it, are simply curious about it, or find it absolutely laughable, people love a good conspiracy theory. From the murder of Julius Caesar to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, there have often been alternative ideas about the truths behind many of the tragic events that have shaped world history.

In his thought-provoking new political action-thriller, Let The Truth Be Told (published by AuthorHouse), author Sonny Hudson takes on one of the newest conspiracy theories beginning to make its mark on history: the truth behind 9/11.

Sure to captivate fans of writers like Robert Ludlum, David Baldacci and John Le Carre, Let The Truth Be Told follows the fascinating story of Dr. Keith Bryant, a popular University of Virginia professor who develops a new course called “The Politics of Conspiracy,” which takes a look at the impact that the media, rumor and hysteria have had on the public’s perception and understanding of many world-changing events.

When Dr. Bryant’s class begins to research the many conspiracy theories surrounding 9/11, certain factions within the U.S. government begin to take notice. Because the students are causing a spike in traffic and hits on a large number of conspiracy websites, blogs and chat groups, there is growing concern that they, along with Dr. Bryant, might come too close to stumbling upon the truth.

The government group charged with protecting the secrets of 9/11 – operating under the cover of telecommunications company Destiny Communications Group (DCG) – issues Dr. Bryant a subtle warning to cease his research, but it goes unheeded, setting off an exciting, fast-paced chain of events that will find Dr. Bryant going to any length to keep the truth from being suppressed.

From DCG-issued teams of assassins to attacks on their friends and families designed to coerce them into giving up, Dr. Bryant and his girlfriend, Loren, find themselves in a fierce battle to survive and bring down the DCG and the lies they have sustained for so long. Will they be successful in their quest to bring the truth to the people, or will they be taken down by an agency dedicated to concealing what really happened that September day?

Find out in the adrenaline-powered, action-packed conclusion of Let The Truth Be Told.

Born and raised in Newport News, Va., Sonny Hudson attended William & Mary, Old Dominion University and Christopher Newport College.
